Honoring Indigenous History: the Eliot Indian Bible and the Natick Praying Indians

Tuesday, February 276:30—7:30 PMCommunity Room Sherborn Library 4 Sanger St. , Sherborn , MA, 01770

Focused on the history of the Indigenous Peoples who were killed or displaced when their land, now Sherborn, was colonized. Doug Brown will focus the discussion on the Praying Indians, the history of the Eliot Indian Bible, and a summary of King Phillip's war, and its impact on the Praying Indians. He will provide background about John Eliot, a minister from Roxbury, and Daniel Gookin, a government official, both of whom established Praying Indian towns across Massachusetts. His talk is designed to help stimulated interest in these underrepresented parts of our early history and to honor and respect the indigenous communities who are a part of that history.

Doug Brown is a healthcare executive at UMass Memorial Health in Worcester. He has been a Sherborn resident for 20 years and has a deep interest in local history. Doug is a collector of antiquarian books about early America, including some related to the topics he will discuss.
