Meditative Stitching

Saturday, February 2410:30 AM—1:30 PMCommunity Room Sherborn Library 4 Sanger St. , Sherborn , MA, 01770

Enjoy this wonderful introduction to slow stitching which draws inspiration from the Japanese Boro and Indian Kantha techniques. Working with several basic stitches, we’ll explore the use of different fabrics, colors and pattern. Create a fabric collage to display or you can use the techniques to embellish jeans or other clothing. This a wonderful way to upcycle used clothing and linens. Attendees may wish to bring their own textiles, but there will also be a selection of fabrics as well as needles and embroidery thread. No experience necessary and beginners are welcome! Please bring a bag for transporting items.

Bio: Ann Bausman always loved the play of color and pattern. For years she worked in paper but more recently rediscovered a love of textiles. A friend gave her some upholstery samples and there was no going back. She became obsessed with using "found fabrics", taking inspiration from the layering of colors and patterns. Amidst this journey she felt inspired to stop buying new clothes in response to the waste and environmental impact of the fashion industry. She took to shopping at thrift stores, mending clothing, and reading up on Boro stitching which has its roots in Japan. Reuse of even the smallest scraps of fabric and visible mending are characteristics of Boro and can be found in her collages and other pieces. The process is wonderfully slow and meditative.

A graduate of Tufts University, Ann also attended classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and later at the American College in Paris and their partner program with the Parsons School of Design. Ann loves teaching and introducing people to my work and relaxing techniques. She has also participated in Open Studios in both Arlington and West Medford and is a former member of the Board at the Arlington Center for the Arts. Her day job is fundraising for The Immigrant Learning Center in Malden.

This class is for ages 13+ and part of our intergenerational programs, sponsored by the Sherborn Library and the Sherborn COA. This will be held at the Library.
