The Poetry of Visionary Experience (COA)

Wednesday, November 1510:30 AM—12:00 PMCommunity Room Sherborn Library 4 Sanger St. , Sherborn , MA, 01770

We will read and discuss poems for which visionary experience is central. The poem itself may be the poet’s actual vision or it may integrate and distill fragments mined from the poet’s mind so that the poem itself becomes a coherent vision. Or the poet may reflect upon the very idea of transcendence and its meaning for them personally or its setting in society and history. Our selection includes poems across the centuries, which is fitting considering that poets for millennia were entrusted by their communities to be knowledge-seekers and interpreters of “other” realms. And as always, the discussions will undoubtedly be lively and even, at times, visionary.

Presenter: Barton Kunstler, Ph.D., has written and studied poetry all his life. He holds an undergraduate degree in English literature and a doctorate in Classical Studies from BU. His poems have been published in various venues and he has run writing and communication programs. He was a full professor and program director at Lesley University’s School of Management.
